Opel has not made headlines in a while with its new Insigna, so that may be the reason for their latest press release. The Insigna’s new sport seats have received a seal of approval for ergonomics by a German panel of doctors and therapists. While this will usually not make news, the pic of the Brookstone-like chair is something pretty cool for an everyday sedan. Hopefully these back friendly seats will make its way on the Saturn Aura replacement whenever it finally makes it to the U.S. If you’re not rejoicing about this news, then I guess you’re not thinking with your butt.
With Lexus’ LF-A on a long delay, the Japanese luxury carmaker needs a new coupe/convertible to keep a sporting image. Lexus has announced it will go on with his plans about a coupe-cabriolet version of its IS-F sporty sedan. Like the SC, which will be dropped in 2011, the IS-F coupe-cabrio will feature a folding hardtop. The car will compete with models like Audi RS4, BMW M3 and Mercedes CLK.
Lexus will unveil the new model in 2009. It will be first sold on the US market. Under the hood there will likely be a V6 engine, but a V8 is still a possibility. Another rumor is that there may be a lightweight version of the IS-F in the pipeline.
Cadillac keeps gunning for the Germans. This time Road and Track helped facilitate the 2009 Cadillac CTS-V’s “anytime, anywhere” challenge to the BMW M5. In the October 2008 issue, the magazine sets up a slugfest at Monticello Motor Club, 90 miles northwest of Manhattan. Each company gets to choose who drives these super sedans. BMW flies in its veteran racer Bill Auberlen, and General Motors chooses its Performance Vehicle Operations Director John Heinricy to pilot its rocket.
It’s a relatively good match up. The CTS-V has an over 50 horsepower advantage, but it also has a 150 lbs disadvantage. The new kid on the block also has the best advantage over the M5, about $28,000 less for the Caddy.
In the end the Cadillac’s best run was half a second quicker than the BMW. Victory for America! But BMW isn’t too disappointed, a new M5 is on the horizon…
Ford will invest at least $75 million to begin converting a Michigan SUV plant to small car production as part of its strategic shift to sell more of the fuel-efficient vehicles in North America. The 51 year old plant is located in Wayne, Michigan and is currently used to build the Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator SUVs. Begining in November, Ford will start moving equipment to build the big SUVs to the Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville, which currently makes Super Duty F-series trucks. The move will clear space for Michigan’s truck body shop to be retooled to make Focus bodies. The Michigan factory will be converted entirely to a car plant in 2010.
The changes are part of Ford’s plan to build more small cars in response to the rapid U.S. market shift away from trucks and SUVs. For the past few months, Ford has said it has not been able to build Focuses fast enough.
Audi launched new advertising campaign for the 2009 A4. After the commercial that appeared during the Olympics, it seems Audi wants to take the attack even further by being, er, greener? Although it also mentions being bigger and more powerful, this is definitely a sign of changing times as Audi also declares it is more fuel-efficient.
It’s a long shot, but Peugeot may end it over 15 year absence from the U.S. market. Peugeot is looking to expand into new segments with new models. "Currently, we are covering 72 percent of the segments," Jean-Philippe Collin, head of PSA Group’s Peugeot brand said. "In the future, it will be more than 90 percent."
This expansion includes production of a diesel hybrid that will begin in 2011. "We are going to offer the diesel hybrid in the upper mid-range and in the crossover segment," Collin said. With North America possibly looking for more diesel and hybrid cars, it seems that a return to the U.S. market is again conceivable. "We are not ruling out going back to the U.S.," he said. "We are closely watching the opportunities resulting from the crisis in North America. But the U.S. isn’t high on the agenda. China, Russia and South America are our priorities."
After unveiling the sixth generation Golf, Volkswagen is now testing the GTI version that is set to be revealed in at the Paris Motor Show in October.
The Golf GTI will be powered by an evolution of the current 2.0-liter turbocharged TFSI engine producing 211bhp. There will be a choice of gearboxes: a six speed manual or a new seven-speed sequential. Three and five-door versions are in the pipeline—we’re showing you a rendering of the three-door with a possible bodykit.
Volkswagen will put in the next GTI the same active suspension system that debuted in the latest Scirocco, a system that adjusts damper stiffness, increasing it to improve agility or reducing it to boost refinement.
Even though many tuners released a sport package for the Audi RS6 Avant, this didn’t stop Sportec in developing its own sport Stage 1 performance kit for the same car. The new package features a reprogrammed ECU which ads 70HP to the car’s 5.0L bi-turbocharged V10 reaching to 650hP at 6,300rpm. With the new kit aboard the RS6 is now capable of reaching 160 mph in under 4.4 seconds with a top speed of 190 mph. There is also available a lowering kit and a set of 20 or 22-inch lightweight alloy wheels.
